Day 2 was the longest day we experienced. After flying all night and spending 7 hours in London, we finally arrived at our hotel in Rome at around 11 pm.

The next morning, we had an early departure (6:45 a.m.) for a private tour that took us to Pompeii and the Amalfi coast. This 13-hour tour was fantastic but pushed us to the edge of exhaustion.

Day 2 – Rome to Pompeii to the Amalfi Coast

You have a few choices when you take day-long excursions like this one. You might be able to take a group tour on a large bus (30 to 50 people) or a smaller coach (<20 people), or you might be able to take a high-speed train. Typically, tour guides are included when a site like Pompeii is a destination.

If you want the most comfortable tour, you can book a private tour that includes pick-up and drop-off at your hotel. The vehicle is usually an 8-9 passenger Mercedes van. This type of tour is typically two to four times the cost (about 1,000 Euros) compared to the other types of tours, which range from (250 to 500 Euros). Those fees are for three people.

When traveling the tight and winding roads of the Amalfi coast, being in the passenger van gives you much more comfort and security than the larger vehicles. This is especially true during the warmer months when traffic is heavier and more tourists travel.
